Chrysler’s Multi-Displacement System (MDS) is an automobile engine variable displacement technology. It debuted in 2006 on the 5.7 L modern Hemi V8. This includes four separate mufflers, two large central ones for V8 mode and two smaller ones near the tailpipes for four-cylinder mode.

Does my Hemi have MDS?

All hemis in the 1500 built after 2006 have the MDS. The only exceptions to this is the mega cab which is a 2500 chassis and the non-mds HD engine.

How does Dodge MDS work?

The MDS solenoids direct oil pressure to the lifters for each cylinder and that pressure pushes in locking pins that allow the lifters to ‘collapse’, so they no longer open the valves. The ECU also shuts off fuel and spark to the cylinders.

What is MDS on a 6.4 Hemi?

Multi-displacement system (MDS) is a promising technology. While cruising the 6.4 HEMI is able to shut down 4 of the 8 cylinders. It’s a great way to use a larger engine to pump out more power while remaining efficient during lower power situations.

How much fuel does MDS save?

Registered. Sounds about right with what others have posted in the past. It appears that the cars gets about 1.5-2.5 mpg better with the MDS “activated”.

Can you delete MDS on Hemi?

You can disable it with a tuner only. The people that physically remove/replace the lifters and cam are typically upgrading the cam and most are non-MDS.

Does 2021 Ram have MDS?

5.7L HEMI® V8 ENGINE This 5.7L V8 also uses the VVT as well as a Multi-Displacement System (MDS) with Fuel Saver Technology.

Can MDS be turned off?

MDS is a “multi-displacement system” that deactivates a cylinder bank on the Chrysler’s Hemi V8 engine to operate in four-cylinder mode for greater fuel efficiency. You can disable this MDS system through a variety of means; from software reprogramming to hardware modifications.

Does MDS actually save gas?

MDS Saves Fuel Cylinder deactivation works to save fuel, but it may not be for the reasons you think. The main misconception is that shutting down half the engine’s cylinders reduces fuel consumption because the half that are shut down aren’t using any fuel. These are where the MDS solenoids would normally go.
