What is a hexie quilt?
Hexagon Quilts, or Hexies, are made using six-sided pieces called Hexagons, all of the sides and angles are the same . This tessallating pattern fits into an all-over design. It is the color and fabric placement of each hexagon that creates the pattern design.
What are Hexies for?

What is Hexiform?
Hexiform is an alternative to the paper or card that is usually used in ‘English Paper Piecing’. Unlike paper or card, Hexiform is not removed – it remains in place to give quality form and finish. Hexiform is fully washable, so there is no problem leaving it in.
How many Hexies are needed for a quilt?
For example, you want to make your quilt using 1″ hexagons. One block would require about 52 hexagons. So, 52 hexes x 90 blocks = 4,680 hexagons. (If you’re using tiny, 1/2″ hexagons, you would need 18,720 hexagons!
How do you join a patchwork hexagon?
Here’s what a do:
- Place two hexagons right sides facing.
- Single thread a needle and make a substantial knot at the end.
- Start where two of the corners meet and push the needle through both of the hexagons at the very edge.
- Use a whipstitch to go from one corner to the other – lots of little tight stitches is best!
