How is solo and ensemble scored?
SCORING. Each student or group of students is evaluated by one judge and rated on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being the highest rating possible. Students or groups that earn a rating of 1 (or “Superior”) are qualified for State Solo & Ensemble Festival which is held in March.
What is solo and ensemble contest?
Solo and Ensemble is an opportunity for students to perform in front of a professional judge and receive feedback. A student is given a first, second, or third based on the quality of their performance but they do not compete against other students. The competition is hosted at an area school or at ICC every year.

What does a 1 mean in solo and Ensemble?
The adjudicator will provide a written and verbal critique of the performance and award a rating based on defined criteria. ( Rating 1 = highest, rating 5 = lowest)
What does a 2 mean in solo and Ensemble?
Division II (Excellent) = 35.9 to 28.0 = 4 – An excellent performance — minor defects. Circle Rating. Division III (Good) = 27.9 to 20.0 = 3 – A good performance -lacking finesse and/or interpretation. Do Not Round Up Division IV (Fair) = 19.9 to 12 = 2 – A fair performance — basic weaknesses.
