Here’s what you do:

  1. Place your materials on a work board.
  2. Polish the pennies with brass polish.
  3. Bend two of the MK484-1 AM radio integrated circuit’s wires to a 90 degree angle.
  4. Solder one of the integrated circuit’s wires to each penny using a solder iron.
  5. Place the tuning capacitor upside down.

How does a crystal radio work without batteries?

As a crystal radio has no power supply, the sound power produced by the earphone comes solely from the transmitter of the radio station being received, via the radio waves captured by the antenna. The power available to a receiving antenna decreases with the square of its distance from the radio transmitter.

How do you ground a crystal radio?

Pound a few feet/meter of copper rod down into the ground or bury it, or bury a long bare wire (it doesn’t have to be straight.) Then connect to that rod or wire. Connect to pipes that are already going into the ground. For example, the cold water pipes in your house may go to the ground.

What kind of crystal is in a crystal radio?

The “crystal radio” type of crystal is of a different material, often galena (lead sulfide). This was one of the first semiconductors in general use. A crystal set would use as long a wire for an antenna as could be had, as every radiowave photon as possible must be gathered.

Can a Schottky diode be used in a crystal radio?

Silicon diodes are not a good choice because their much higher barrier potential requires larger signals for efficient rectification. Certain silicon Schottky diodes with low barrier potential will work well but most small-signal Schottky diodes will not perform as well as a garden-variety germanium diode.

Can you build a 3 Penny radio at home?

Building a Three-Penny Radio. A crystal radio is nice because it needs no power, and the materials can all be home-made or at least found around the house. But the crystal radio needs a big antenna, and a good ground, and so is not very portable.

Why is it called a three penny radio?

We call the radio a “Three Penny” radio because we use three shiny pennies as anchors for the various parts the radio needs. This makes the construction very easy. If you have never soldered anything before, this is a great project to start with.

What is a crystal radio?

A crystal radio is the distilled essence of a radio. It has very few parts, it needs no batteries or other power source, and it can be built in a short time out of things you can find around the house. The reason a crystal radio does not need any batteries is the amazing capabilities of the human ear.

Can I use a portable antenna for a crystal radio?

But the crystal radio needs a big antenna, and a good ground, and so is not very portable. To get away with using a much smaller, portable antenna, we will need to amplify the tiny signal it receives. This requires a portable power supply, such as a battery.
